What is collagen?

Collagen comes from the Greek word “kólla,” meaning “glue” and the French “-gène,” meaning “something that produces.” In other words, it is a “glue-producing” protein. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It is the major component of connective tissues that make up several body parts, including tendons, ligaments, skin and muscles. It’s necessary to form and heal virtually every tissue in your body. 

As you age, your collagen network slowly breaks down. Fortunately, your body is able to quickly absorb and use oral collagen to assist in replacing the collagen lost in the ageing process.

Collagen Peptides (also known as collagen hydrolysate or hydrolysed collagen) are collagen proteins that have been broken down and processed into powder form for easy absorption and use.

What is the difference between Collagen and Gelatin?

The story of gelatin actually starts with a protein called collagen. In food, collagen is found mostly in the “odd bits” and tougher cuts of beef that contain a lot of connective tissue. You might recognise these as the parts of the animals that our ancestors ate, but we typically throw away today.  

Gelatin

When these cuts of meat are cooked, the cooking transforms the collagen protein into gelatin. Gelatin is the cooked form of collagen. No enzymes are used to create gelatin and the collagen is not entirely broken down. To make it into powder it is extracted, purified and dried. Gelatin has gelling properties that make it perfect for making jellies, desserts and gravies.

Collagen Hydrolysate

To make collagen hydrolysate, further processing using enzymes (a process called enzymatic hydrolysis) is required. These enzymes break down the collagen by splitting the chemical bonds. This creates small collagen chains your body can use to build its own connective tissue. To compare the two, gelatin is made up of long chains of amino acids whereas collagen peptides have short chains. That’s why gelatin is less absorbable and efficient than collagen peptides. Collagen doesn’t have gelling properties, so it can be mixed into hot or cold liquids and is virtually tasteless. 

Are Thankfully Nourished Collagen Peptides grass-fed and finished?

Our collagen is derived from the hides of beef cattle that are free range and grass fed for the duration of their life on the farm. Once the cattle are sold and sent for processing, there may be a few days where they are in transit and could potentially be fed grain. For this reason we do not claim they are “grass finished”. We are confident that this has no impact on the quality or benefits found in the final product. 

Are Thankfully Nourished Collagen Peptides Certified Kosher or Halal?

No, they do not have these certifications.
